This is a hand dug procedure we have pioneered called "pig tailing". We tie the branchlets of each branch individually then pull up each "pig tail" to a pole attached to the main trunk. This technique greatly reduces damage to the fragile stems and allows the tree to be handled with ease.

This picture shows the flat side on the left side of the ball. The primary function of the flat side is to distribute the weight of the tree evenly on the trailer when it is laying on its side. This helps to maintain the integrity of the ball and to keep it from moving or rolling in transit.
Burlap is always placed on the trunk to protect it from the twine which can bruise the cambium layer and damage the tree.
Here you can see the finished bottom of our hand dug root balls. It is laced neatly and providing plenty of support to maintain the integrity of the ball.
This loaded trailer is ready to ship with the exception of a protective tarp that would go on before delivery. There are two six inch Locust on a forty eight foot trailer overlapping the back end by six feet.
